Apart from Colt, Springfield Armory was the first company to manufacture the old Colt 1911 pistol. There are however two differences between the old models: the text on the flanks of the slide is different. On the left-hand side of the frame, behind the trigger guard, is a factory stamp of a flaming grenade. On the right-handed side of the frame, just above the series number, is the old Springfield logo, in the shape of an eagle. In addition, the front sight and the slide are manufactured out of one piece of steel. The single-action Springfield A1 also resembles many of the Colt models, however Springfield did make a couple of improvements to the original model. Firstly, the feed ramp of the barrel chamber was widened, vastly improving the loading, especially of cartridges with the modern variety of bullets and lead slugs. The ejector port in the slide was also enlarged, improving the functioning of the weapon. Springfield themselves, have not manufactured the M1911-A1 .45 ACP pistol for some time now, but has placed production in the hands of the Brazilian weapons factory Imbel of Itajuba, where the SAR-48 rifle is also manufactured for Springfield. Springfield does however still produce variations of the 'old' Colt 1911 concept, with built-in or attached compensators, as special match models or as concourse pistols.
